Since the old thread was becoming a little too large, I was asked to start a new one.
So, without further ado, here it is:

Original Message from Raptormeat:

Hello everyone and welcome to the The Forum Scholars Guild! This is a guild devoted to the intelligent discussion of Elder Scrolls games and lore. Everyone is welcome to join, of course, but you should be aware of our simple guidelines:

  • By no means do you have to be a lore-God to join. Don't be intimidated if you aren't Ken Rolston's apprentice. All that is needed is an interest, and everyone is welcome!
  • There are two branches to The Guild. The main branch is the Lore Division. Members of the Lore Division should enjoy learning and discussing Elder Scrolls Lore. The other branch of the guild is the Game Division. Members of the Game Division should be knowledgeable or interested in the actual Elder Scrolls games (mechanics, storylines, etc).
  • Members of both divisions should enjoy answering questions and presenting information when needed. However, as I am slowly beginning to learn, sometimes (with lore, at least) it is just as fun for someone to find out an answer on their own, so impart knowledge wisely. Use the power of "guidance" whenever applicable.
  • As goes without saying, use the title of "Forum Scholar" for Good and not Evil.

Possible Ideas for Guild Activities (just ideas):

1. Members could have "specialty" areas- topics they feel they are especially versed in. For example, if Brendan were to join, perhaps his specialty would be the Dreugh, since he performed a great deal of research on them.

2. If people wanted we could have weekly of bi-weekly Guild-sponsored "topic threads". These would be posted in the Elder Scrolls Forum and would be dedicated to a single lore or game-related issue, mystery, or topic. Members and Non-members alike could then participate in a discussion.

3. Members would be encouraged to write articles for consumption of the general public. After the article is released there could be discussion on the topic at hand and the issues the article brought up.

Ok, so that's the whole thingy. If anyone wants to join, please post in this thread! Here's hoping this thread doesn't drop to the bottom, and that we inspire lots of people to be cool

I, formerly YunYammka am now reverting to past 'legend' as Pyrrhana

Okay I did a little research and have come to the conclusion that there is not much to know about corprus and the mechanics of advancement in house Dagoth. here is my report on what i do know:

In the course of attempting the conquest of Morrowind, Dagoth Ur has been recruiting followers. These misguided souls, called 'Dreamers', get their name from the dreams that Dagoth Ur uses to recruit them. Because there is no solid connection between the dreamers I have encountered with my travels and any known house or guild(excluding, of course house dagoth itself) I surmise that the dreamers are not recruited from a pool of a perticular affiliation. It is improbable that the Dunmer chosen to be Dreamers(they are all Dunmer) are predisposed against outlanders and therefor perhaps more susceptible to the subliminal messages that Lord Dagoth sends from his redoubt beneath red mountain. Those who recovered from the dream state in my presence, during my travels, did not seem hateful to an outlander such as I. I do not, moreover, see any evidence that they made active efforts to seek out the followers of the Sixth House before they were subtly coerced into following Lord Dagoth. I suspect that the dreams are generally broadcast and those who are susceptible will react by seeking out the Sixth House cult to plaedge their fervor in the service of their dark lord. Those who tell accounts of freinds so affected do not tell of trips to the ashlands or red mountain, nor of any mysterious absences. It seems that the cult is most likely a front for House Dagoth, a way to cull the choice followers for advancement. Those not judged worthy are left to maintain the cult and mask the true reason for it's existence. those who are chosen then must climb the ladder of service under lord dagoth first as ash slaves and then following the chain so aptly described by another whose name i forget. Those who are labeled as corprus beasts and stalkers, on the other hand, are not recruits but victims of a disease that is benign in the ash creatures but deadly in the general populace. those thus afflicted are said to die within weeks of onset of frank symptoms. the exceptions, such as the 'last dwarf', are anomalies caused my unusally strong resistance or merely Lord Dagoth's perverse favor. Transmission of the disease from ash creatures to normal folk seems likely. It may be possible for lord Dagoth to use corprus as a tool to compel the adherence of those who otherwise be foes, as he once indeed attempted to coerce me! The fact that I was cured, however, implies either his acquiescence to my will or a genuine flaw in his pet creation.

Thats all, comments or suggestions to yunyammka@hotmail.com

[edit]
I have been surfing the forum and read an alternate theory, that the dreamers carry corprus meat to catch the disease and either fail and become corprus beasts or follow the ascension path. this does not explain how some outlanders catch the disease and end up the same way as those who 'failed'

As I understand, this is no place to post your findings, which enlightening as they may be are nevertheless misplaced.

I shan't seek to join this guild, however hope to be an outside "freelance" learned man.

Im done already! here is my report on the Dwemer disappearance, and if anyone feels it is misplaced I can post elsewhere.

Report on the Disappearance of the Dwemer and how it relates to broken Dragons

One of the greatest and most oft discussed mysteries of Tamriel is the disappearance of the Dwemer. After months of study, discussion, and contemplation of the issue I have compiled this report on my theory to explain the circumstances surrounding this event, and how I think it was truly resolved. It is a common conceit among followers of the Temple or other religious body to believe that the Dwemer died or were cursed for stirring their fingers in the affairs of gods. Once this fallacy is stripped away, however, there is little evidence to support this point of view. It is a common point of many legends among the tribes and cults of Tamriel that the ‘Mundus’ or skinball that we inhabit is a creation apart from the rest of reality, one of the only places where change is a fact of life and time moves at a regular pace, controlled in our case by the dragon god Akatosh. It is recorded in Xanathar’s great Imperial Library that time only started here when Akatosh came into being, establishing a clear link between one of the Nine and Time’s regular function. Note the name assigned to stasis’ embodiment: Anu. Then note that this is the prefix to an artifact associated with at least one ‘Dragon Break’, Anumidium. The golem is often referred to as Numidium, perhaps a result of the Imperial Cult’s influence over world events. The cult is, after all, in the service of Aedra and therefore biased in favor of Sithis. One so biased would be predisposed towards believing the worst of the Dwemer, who were working to escape time. Putting aside the issue of the various religious objections to studing the dwemer, there are a few questions about the particulars of the event. First of all, the Dwemer in Mournhold apparently did die, not as a result of Kagrenac’s experiments but because they did not leave with the rest of the dwemer. It is noteworthy that they appeared to utilize hydroelectric power, and the architecture is significantly different from that of the geothermal-powered strongholds of Vvardenfell. It is possible that they were dissenters, refusing to participate in Kagrenac’s arcane experimentation. It is also possible that since I have inquired and found that the Dwemer on other continents disappeared, there may have been a network that they simply were not connected to for one reason or another. While the earlier effects of activating Anumidium(the dragon break it facilitated) were widespread, this time it must have been focused and channeled, perhaps by spellcasters/artificers in deep meditation or by some sort of mechanical transmission. Perhaps it had something to do with the observatory dome at a Dwemer facility, such an instrument might have been used to send and reflect certain types of energy impulses(presumably powered by the geothermal energy produced by Red Mountain and generated by Lorkhan’s Heart) off of one of Tamriel’s moons. If done with enough precision, such a transmission could have activated devices in specific locations all over Tamriel in near unison, or in perfect unison if the impulses were timed correctly. This seems farfetched, however, and it is most likely that some sort of magic transmission was utilized. Perhaps those with lesser abilities were killed in the process, which had to be activated early because of the advance of the Chimer forces. That would explain the less than reasonable numbers of ghosts present in Dwemer ruins. While previous dragon breaks had brought stasis to Tamriel, the Dwemer thought to bring their race back to stasis, the ‘far shore’ of the Yokudan mythos. The previous occasions on which Anu invaded into Tamriel involved a brute-force approach to dazing or irritating Akatosh, so that the Dragon god of time might loose his hold on Tamriel and lose his ability to force a steady progression of time, for a while. On other occasions, as in the story of King Wufarth’s ‘new thu’um’, involve fine manipulation of time itself, through stimulation of Akatosh (shaking the dragon just so). The Dwemer did the same thing, but with enough power(generated by way of the geothermal energy from deep within Red Mountain – if you visit you will notice pipes and rigging that could easily perform such a function) that they ripped through, squeezing through Akatosh’s jealous grasp. That a few of them did not transcend and therefore died is not surprising in the least. Further proof of their success is that nobody in Tamriel noticed the effects of their channeled energies. This implies that there was neither too much energy, for it did not overflow, nor too little, for they did disappear. As for where they went, it was not to oblivion. Vivec can testify to that, and he is unlikely to be lying since it would be in accordance with his views if they had died en masse for their supposed trespass.

I think that it is the same, unless you are a Daedra. They can return, so they are not really dead. Mortals, on the other hand, are creatures of Sithis and therefore unable to return from the waters of oblivion. Ergo, they are well and truly dead. There are no other realms for the dead to go to, that I know of. I recall reading some story or other about a Daedra who was tricked but managed to bring an entire island into oblivion with him. This to me appears to be a clear reference to a sort of hell. The dwemer were not daedra, they are not in oblivion, so they are somewhere else.

Ok, here is my ammended report on the Disappearance of the Dwemer, modified on the basis of information about the star known as Mnemoli.

It is also possible that since I have inquired and found that the Dwemer on other continents disappeared, there may have been a network that they simply were not connected to for one reason or another. While the earlier effects of bringing Anu into Tamriel (Anumidium, the dragon break it facilitated) were widespread, this time it must have been focused and channeled, perhaps by spellcasters/artificers in deep meditation or by some sort of mechanical transmission. After reading a passage on the star called Mnemoli, a star that passed over Red Mountain at or near the time of the battle there, I have an interesting alternative. Known to some as a lost child of Anu, this star probably had characteristics and powers the Dwemer could utilize. Their observatory could have predicted its arrival, and perhaps it facilitated Kagrenac’s experiments by providing a source of power for his devices. After all, geothermal energy can only produce so much, while a star can provide energy in quantities that could melt an entire planet. Or, if energy was not lacking, perhaps he needed a portal out of this mortal plane. The observatory could then serve to carry a message, not among the Dwemer but out to Anu her/his/itself. Perhaps a plea for escape from Sithis? It is difficult to know. I believe it is most likely that the star was indeed a gate, one which was opened during a very narrow time window that unfortunately coincided with the advance of the Chimer armies. These all seem equally possible, however, and it is almost certain that the transition involved Mnemoli. Perhaps those with lesser abilities were killed in the process, which had to be activated early because of the advance of the Chimer forces, combined with the narrow window of opportunity imposed by Mnemoli’s imminent arrival. That would explain the less than reasonable numbers of ghosts present in Dwemer ruins. While previous dragon breaks had brought stasis to Tamriel, the Dwemer thought to bring their race back to stasis, the ‘far shore’ of the Yokudan mythos. Some of the previous occasions on which Anu invaded into Tamriel involved a brute-force approach to dazing or irritating Akatosh, so that the Dragon god of time might loose his hold on Tamriel and lose his ability to force a steady progression of time, for a while. When the Mukhari selectives danced on the great Tower they loosened Akatosh’s hold on time not by force but by splitting the union of the various Aedra. Can i join? I know a lot about artifacts, weapons, armor, spells, etc. I'm also pretty good with the mechanics of the storylines, and thus have a modest understanding of the main events of the history of the empire. I think I could help out the cause to be enlightened with all elder scrolls knowledge, so please invite me.

Yun,

Respectfully, I would love to sit and read through your reports, but they presently give me eye strain. Could you not make use of space between paragraphs, bullet points (section titles) and color for emphasis?

This would make them a great deal more readable and ultimately more informative.

So, if I follow this, the Dwemer escaped time. Is there then, a "land outside of time" where we can find the Dwemer today? I thought there were a number of realms in Oblivion?

By the way, the Psijiics (and their island) disappeared for a long time, and then came back. Are you saying a Daedra Lord did this?

Excuse me all scholars guild! I appologize for the jack@$$ named Morly the great who is bothering you. He, in no way, represents the beliefs of the Gahdun Club. I appologize for everything this idiot has said to all of you. We don't want to start crap with anyone. The only reason we acted so dark when we started is because it catches people's attention. We have no intentions of starting a problem here. To show the respect to the scholars, I honestly do want to have an alliance with the scholars. I know things have been said to you from a certain MEMBER ,who's name I will not mention, that have been misleading. Please, accept my appology and my treaty to truely be friends. Also, don't email the link...srry.

He was giving me the impression that your org was feuding with the Scholar's guild. That would not be a good stance to take. Glad you cleared it up for me

Maybe you guys can be an IRC discussion group rather then simply in the forum and PMs, since you want secrecy and all. Just a suggestion

Well, there isn't too much to our secrets, its just, the secret like actions sometimes, more often then not, intigues others. I never meant it to be a bunch of private discussions. All are welcome. If anyone wants to ask questions in our threads thats fine. If they want to ask questions in here...thats fine too. Either way its all good. I apologize for this misconception about us, and I hope from now on, we can all get along. As I said before, don't think of the rest of us like you did him.

Why would you start another "club" when the first one is perfectly fine, and has much better grammar and punctuation skills, too? Anyway, what I think on the Dwemer has already been posted, but I will rehash for you: Kagrenac was the only Dwemer wearing Wraithguard, so he was the only one protected from the shock of the other 2 tools. I think the surge of power killed all the Dwemer except him, and he took the guise Yagrum Bagarn to avoid the Tribunal.

To Bortidarmor, as you seem to have been ignored in the ensuing ramblings (no offence to everyone, im sure you know which ramblings i mean).

To join the Forum Scholars Guild you merely have to express an interest, therefore you are a member. If you wish to put a specification you can record it in this thread (if you have one, many dont and are not lesser for it). You may/may not also put the title in your profile, depending on personal preference.

Hope i havent overstepped myself in the explanation

I like Yea's idea. It seems a little outlandish that Kegrenac is actually that Yagrum guy, but I think it is a pretty cool idea and I think it could work. Also I have said it before, that maybe the calling ability of the dwarves has something to do with the reason why all of the dwarves dissappeared. Even the ones outside of the heart's tones. Since their minds were all connected maybe that is how. Thats my opinion.

Yagrum was in the Oblivion (relm of deadra) doing research for Kagrenac, and when he came back, all the Dwemer where gone (I believe he said that he came back like 40ish years after the war) It was in his introduction speach...

And Wraithguard would only have protected Kagrenac from Sunder and Keening, not the powers of the heart itself, so he was just as vulnerable as every other dwemer...

Yeah, can I join

Glad to see the guild is still growing. I, myself, had lost track of it for a while until one day I decided to check the elderscrolls subforum and found it right on the first page.

Hiya to any scholary-type member out there...I'd like to formally offer my own services to the guild. I love the history of TES, particularly Morrowind (since that was the first TES that really interested me..). As such, my areas of focus would be all around the Dunmer, both Ashlanders and Great Houses...though in truth, I'm more interested in th Great Houses and relations/wars with other nations and regions of Tamriel. Researching cities/customs/cultures etc.. is really my fare, so um....there we are.

Oh, and my writing is usually typo-free and well-done (if I do say so myself....and I do )

Let me too offer my more-then-humble contribution to the guild. I've done some iconographic research in the past (sacred geometry of tribunal thread) and tried to trace the development of mer architectural styles but for the most part I still wonder in the dark and get confused after reading some revelations of loremasters compared to whom I am but a neophyte.

Areas interest: Arts and crafts of tamriel/Architecture/Corelation of different religions

Right now I am trying to find a meaning behind patterns of the ashlander tapestries.

Oh and my writings are usually filled with spelling errors and poorly structured

Im back, sorry for running off like that.

Good to see the Forum Scholars are still going strong, is The Imperial Library still hosting the compleate guide to Tamriel Lore?

I highly recomend that as a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to learn about Tamriel and is just starting out, its a combanation of Several of the comunities most compleate a full websites, speaking of which, I should do an update to it at some point.

One of the wonderful things about the TES games is that they are seeped in so much history and lore that the game world is comparable to some of the most defined fantisy worlds such as Middle Earth, Krynn and Forgotten realms.

Another pieace of advice, if you cannot find the other games in the series at least look for the Hint books, these will at least give you an over view of the events that have happoned.

I just read in this thread about the theory of the dwemer traveling in time, what if they didnt so much as travel in time but stopped traveling through time ?, what if they all still exist but are back at the moment before they all disapeared ?, the rest of the world continued moveing forward through time but left the dwemer where they were ?. It's one way to remain alive by to disapear from the face of the world.

Simply express an interest, as stated here:

I, TSBasilisk, wish to join the Forums Scholars Guild Lore Division.

Also, to One87, compare the evidence you use, and the evidence currently accrued against it:

Yours:
1.) The Dwemer vanished.
2.) There's a continent nobody goes to where they might be.

Against yours:
1.) The Dwemer vanished.
2.) Every account, for men and mer alike, state the Dwemer vanished suddenly while still on the battlefield.
3.) Three to four separate accounts list the reason for the extinction of the Dwemer. Most agree on the mechanics, but not the full end results.
4.) Yagrum Bagarn states he could not find his people in all his travels, and in all his life since the Battle at Red Mountain he has not heard of another living Dwemer.
5.) Vivec cannot sense them anywhere on Mundus, INCLUDING the southern continent.
6.) Azura doesn't seem worried about them, and she wanted them DEAD.

I don't know what section I would belong to though...any pointers to get me started?

Only in spirit, really. There aren't really any official threads that have been active lately. Basically, you can declare yourself a member and your Guild activity is just your participation here on this forum.

If you hae questions, I would suggest several things. First, read the Lore FAQ at the top of the forum if you have not already done so. Also, using the search function may help. If this still does not answer your questions, then post a new thread with your questions. If you have many, it may be best to ask as many as you can at once if they are at all related. It's just usually not a good idea to post too many new threads at once.

I already read the FAQ and a part of the Imperial Library too.
Tomorrow when I wake up I'll search the topics on this forum for my answers.

I'll also try to make groups of questions tomorrow morning although most of them have to do with theology and the first two Era's.

Also, is the "Theoretical Whirling School Of Vivec" part of the "Forum Scholars Guild" or an independent faction? Seeing how the School of Vivec might be primary interested in the teachings of Lord Vivec and the Chimer/Dunmer's side of the story (no offense meant!).

We are separate. I haven't "officially" joined the FSG, but I really don't see what I'm doing any different than any active members. I hang out here and discuss lore.

And yes, the Whirling School is most interested in the teachings of Vivec, but that often overlaps with the rest of the lore, particularly given the significance of his teachings. However, we are scholars and not worshippers. We are fully aware of the source of the Tribunal's power and Apogrypha that is hidden by the Temple. We study Vivec's teaching for a deeper understanding of the Aurbis rather than from any sense of dedication or faith in Vivec. We do in general, however, honor and revere Vivec as a wise teacher and sage.

You also have a little place hidden aside where you study the heretical works of the Dwemer.

Yes, the FSG is still alive. You do not have to be an "Official Member," though.

The Forum Scholars Guild has set up shop at The Imperial Library. No new papers have been published lately. You can visit the site by clicking--> Here

I just thought that I would plug the Guild one more time. If there are any interested people, please start writing! We could always use more stuff. I've noticed a few new topics here at the Forums, and I've even started my Guide to the Psijic Order.

Here are some topic ideas, but feel free to use your own:

You could always do a Guide. How about a Guide to . . .
. . . the Morag Tong
. . . the Dark Brotherhood
. . . the Imperial Cult
. . . et cetera

Or how about A Reflection on the State of the Empire?

I hope to see some fabulous work really soon.

I'm considering doing a report on the history of the state-sponsored Fighters/Mages/Thieves guilds. I don't know whether to do a combined report however or to do 3 separate reports. What do you guys think?

There is a new paper out, for the first time in an era. I, Gleb, wrote the Dwemeri Tactics paper, and more will follow, though on different subjects. Perhaps a Guide to the Earthbones?

Geez I would love to join the FSG but I don't think I really have a specialty. The only thing I'm interested in is old lore, creation stories, and theologic ideas. Hey if anybody has kept tabs on my posts give me an idea of what I would be good at. Please?

I think it would be great to have them separated: A Guide to the Mages Guild, a Guide to the Thieves Guild, and a Guide to the Fighters Guild. . . BUT if you feel that there isn't enough substance in doing them seperately or that there is a common theme that you can explore by combining the three guilds, then please do so.

That is just my opinion. What does everyone else think?

I personally think that the guides to the guilds should be separated unless there is a heavy common theme (as B said). What could possibly be done is have a first section dealing with how the empire views and regulates guilds in a common manner and in the guild sections have the specifics of each such as their agenda, enemies, and heirarchy (if that can be found).

I know that information can be found in the book The Morrowind Prophecies: Official Guide to Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It lists a Brief Description, Favored Skills, Advancement, Enemies, and Allies for each guild.

Hmm. Never read the guide. I guess I really should get it. Now someone just needs to extrapolate more data from that reference and bring meaning to it all possibly describing lore-related purposes of the the favored skills of the guilds. On the question of hierarchy, do the faction ranks just apply to Vvardenfell, Morrowind, or do they extend up to the level of the Empire? Or does the head of a guild in any particular province act as a representative to the Empire? If I remember correctly, I think Trebonius said something along those lines.

Anyway back on-topic: I believe the Forum Scholars Guild is a good way of joining people together in friendly research of the strange workings of Nirn and its surrounding planes (not sure if "planes" is an appropriate word). It also helps organize the massive amounts of lore into a more ordered and comprehendable system to those of us less knowledgeable. (We are strange, us mortals, always trying to make order out of chaos.)

hmm. i suppose i would like to join.

the thing that interests me most would be the politics of the great houses with holdings on vvardenfell, their relations with the empire, and how the morag tong keeps them in check. i'll get to work on it if there are no objections.

Well, if the guild's up and running again, I'd like to join in too. Is there any objection to someone that likes Morrowind creatures? It's not really a great mysterious, theological subject, but it might be needed too...

I've just started a little paper on the cliff racer on these forums. (Why there are so many of them etc.)

BTW, would somebody be kind enough to give me a link to the "Anatomy of the Alit" topic? I know it exists, but I can't find it and I'd really like to read it.

I, Dr.Morbus Doom, professor of Historical Studies and famed artifact collector would like to join the scholars guild. Mostly, I like to discuss the intricacies of Dwemeri culture. "For the future, look to the past..." I always say. Except for the extinction. That's one part I won't be assimilating.

It's great to see so much interest. Just keep writing and when you have something you feel you want published at Forum Scholars Guild Website, just petition us here in the Lore Forum or at The Storyboard, and we will take look at it. Of course, you could always try and PM me or Attrebus (he's managing the FSG site), but we usually visit both places pretty frequently.

  • Your work must be 'well written' - decent grammar, spelling etc.
  • It should try to have supporting information from official sources. Of course, this is a fairly shady area. However, doing this will go a long way to adding validity to your arguments.
  • The article will be attributed to individuals - if you aren't confident enough to put your name to the article, we won't publish it.

I, personally, think it is important to let us know that you want your posted work to be considered for the FSG. Several people simply just want to express their views here and other, like Nigedo for example, create great works but publish them elsewhere. Not every great scholar wants his or her work to be displayed at the FSG. We need to know if you want us to take a look at it.

Thanks!

I'd like to join, too, being a scholar residing in the Iliac Bay, I tend to focus my affairs towards western Tamriel, rather than the east. I know quite a bit about western, Breton culture and religion, and politics. I might write a paper.
